Reflections on the Sufficiency of Christ: Thanks to David Platt

Not to write an online ‘diary’ for the world to see, but I feel compelled to break from my series on Calvinism and Our Generation to reflect for a moment on Christ’s sufficiency.

After hearing David Platt preach in today’s chapel service at Southern Seminary, my heart is compelled and stirred.

Stir my heart O’ LORD.

Much of my heart is heavy for my need of materialism – my selfish desires; much of my heart is heavy for how little I actually ‘want’ to ‘need’ Jesus; much of my heart is heavy for how little I give to others; much of my heart is heavy for the fact that 26,000 little kids will die today because they don’t have food and water to provide them life; much of my heart is heavy for the 40,000,000 orphans all over the world who have nobody to call ‘daddy’ or ‘mommy’ and have stopped crying because there is no one there to hear them cry; much of my heart is heavy for villages who have no clean water; much of my heart is heavy for the millions of HIV/Aids victims all over the world… many who don’t even know they have the disease; much of my heart is heavy for those living in the devastation of Haiti.

Much of my heart is heavy for the way I live my life outside of being completely sufficient on Christ.

Stir my heart O’ LORD.

Much of the way we live in America as Christians is not real and total sufficiency for Jesus.

Stir our hearts O’ LORD.

May we be a generation that forsakes all in respect and reverence for the cross.  May we be a generation that cares for little kids who need someone to hold them.  May we be a generation that is so passionate about the gospel that the world thinks we’re absolutely crazy.  May we be a generation that will forsake all for starting churches where there are mosques.  May we be a generation that calls the next generation to forsake all and follow after the King.

…as Jesus did when he called back to crowd and his disciples saying, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it (Matthew 8:34-25).”

May we be a generation that is passionate about the cross.

This is sufficiency.

Let us give up our comforts and materialism to give to those in need, to give more to those in need… and then to give even more.

Stir our hearts O’ LORD!
