Since 1973 when Roe v. Wade changed the landscape of the country there have been more than 50,000,000 aborted children. Even when the number of murders has decreased recently, there are still 1.3 million per year in the United States.
When protests break out and you see people picketing to support life in this country you mainly see two victims of concern: the unborn child and the affected family. They rightly focus on the disaster of the abortion and its wake of destruction upon these two groups. It’s right for us to think about the 50 million children that never even get the chance to live and make a difference in high school, love a family, play a sport, and enjoy the blessings of life given to us by God. It is, also, right for us to focus on the lie given to pregnant mothers all across the nation that says an abortion will fix the problem. Young women and men who sign away the life of a baby deal with guilt and the burden for the rest of their life or until they find healing at the cross, and this is an injustice worthy to fight for.
If we focus solely on the unborn and if we focus solely on the affected family, we are right, but we will not fully understand the wake of destruction that abortion leaves.
Abortion minimizes the potential of maximizing the Glory of God to a skeptic world.
As I look at Redemption History in the Bible, I see that the two most earth shattering events (the Exodus and the Cross) both being born in the warfare of an abortion clinic of sorts. Look at Exodus 1:16 and see the command to the midwives to kill the half born male babies. It is out of this context God raised up Moses, providing for his needs and life to later use him as the deliverer of Israel out of Egypt.
Fast forward to Jesus’ day in Matthew 2:16, we see Herod go nuts in Pharaoh fashion as he orders all males two and under be murdered. But what we don’t see is a God who panics, rather a God who provides because he is in control. In Matthew 2, we see God’s guidance of Joseph and Mary to keep Jesus safe and to provide for him during the time of Herod’s tyranny.
These two instances are not isolated occurrences of how God works. God is in the business of turning the curse into the blessing. God did it with the curse of creation bringing us redemption (Genesis 3), God did it with Balaam blessing Israel (Deuteronomy 23:5), God did it with the curse of Jesus’ death bringing life to the world, and God continues to do it through our daily afflictions and trials (1 Peter 1:6-7). Even in my church, I am weekly reminded with two families who have seen God’s renewal and love through babies that were prime candidates for abortion, yet they chose God’s provision over the enemy’s practices.
God is our Father (Psalm 27:10). God is our Provider (Genesis 22:14). God is our Refuge (Psalm 46.1). God is our Strong Tower (Prov. 18:10). God is Love (1 John 4:8). God is Glorious. When we abort babies, we refuse God the opportunity to lavish his attributes on a world that desperately needs to see Him work. For the love of God, stop aborting babies.
